さて、ひょんなことから今回読んだ本が、破天荒!―サウスウエスト航空 驚愕の経営 です。サウスウエスト航空は、その独自な経営で注目を集めています。特徴と言えば、格安航空券の提供ですが、でも、大規模なチケット予約システムが無かったり、ハブ空港なるものもありません。そして、機内でのサービスも非常に限定的、さらにその上座席の予約がありません。このような簡素なサービスがこの格安のフライトを提供しているのでしょう。
サウスウエスト航空は、アメリカでも6番目に大きい航空会社です。しかし、その輸送顧客数では2006年度に全米一となっています。とにかく、顧客満足度が高い事として有名です。
経営スタイルとしては、顧客第一ではなくて、「従業員第一」なのです。そもそも、サウスウエストに代表されるサービス業では、従業員が非常に満足している場合、おのずと仕事の質が高くなる。その結果、顧客に最高のサービスが提供できるというハーブケレハー（Chairman）の考え方が根底にあります。世の中一般には、「顧客主義」、「顧客至高主義」なんてものがあります。これはこれで間違っていないのですが、サービスを至高のものとして提供する場合、提供者がそのサービス提供に準備できている必要は確かにあるはずです。
さて、この破天荒!―サウスウエスト航空 驚愕の経営 では、サウスウエスト航空の従業員が実践した様々なユニークなサービスや、型破りのサウスウエストのサービスとユーモアがたくさん詰まっています。このような従業員の態度、機転の利いたふるまい、そしてさらにこの一連の行動が、サウスウエスト航空の企業文化として根付いてしまっています。
