アメリカのMVNO

MVNOは日本では聞きなれない言葉かもしれません。言葉としては、Mobile Virtual Network Operator の略であり、仮想携帯電話事業者の事を指します。「仮想」と言っても、単純に自社で設置したネットワークなどの設備を持たず、大手の携帯電話事業者から卸売りという形でサービスの提供を受けることにより、携帯電話サービスを実現します。

　アメリカで有名なMVNOとしては、Virginレコードとか、セブンイレブンとかがあります。

　アメリカの携帯電話市場は何とも混沌としています。大手から、地域系の携帯電話会社を含めて50社近く存在します。さらにその上、MVNOとして新たに参入する会社もあります。その一例として、ディズニーグループのESPNがあります。アメリカのCATVなどで放送を提供しているスポーツ専門チャンネルです。

　一体、こういった企業が携帯電話に参入する場合のチャンスとは？

有名ブランドが続々参入--MVNOが変える米携帯電話市場

ESPNでは、VerizonのVCastサービスやSprintのテレビ番組配信サービスなど、従来の携帯電話事業者経由でもコンテンツの提供を継続する計画だ。しかしJhaによると、ESPNが自社コンテンツをバンドルしたサービスを独自に展開することにした背景には、既存キャリアの対応が十分でないことに対する不満があったという。

　その後に、実際にVCast（ベライゾン社の動画配信サービス）でのコンテンツの新鮮さ、つまり更新間隔、目的のコンテンツのアクセシビリティに対する不満が述べられています。まぁ、それはそれで一理あるのかもしれませんが。実際にユーザサイドに立った場合、ケータイで見るための面白いコンテンツが無い。という点もあると思います。

　日本とかヨーロッパとか、鉄道が発達している場所では、電車に乗りながら。バスに乗りながら。なんて需要はあるのかな？と思います。アメリカの場合、車社会ですから、利用シーンという点ではいささかクエスチョンです。その上で、わざわざケータイでテレビで放映された10分以上コンテンツを見たいと思うでしょうか？ビデオにとっておいて自宅で見てもOKですし、結果の速報を欲しいのであれば、文字情報である程度満足かな？と思います。オフィスなどでは、インターネットとPCもありますし。

　やっぱりケータイで動画を配信する場合には、ケータイに合わせたコンテンツを作る必要があるかな。きっと長さ的には１分程度。サクッとみれてしまう程度の長さに最低でも編集する必要があるでしょう。スポーツファンにとっては、ケータイ動画よりもラジオの方がうれしかったりして（笑）。

　最後に、アメリカのケータイって品質悪いんですよね。平気で一日中通話不可能だったりしますし。（今はどうか分かりません）。そういった場合に、MVNOで提供する場合、そのサービス品質はどうしてもMVNOを提供する携帯電話事業者の品質を越えることができませんから。特にビックグランドを持つ会社にとっては、ブランドを傷つける恐れもあります。
