GoogleがISPになっちゃうの？

　っと、タイトルは書きすぎですね・・・。:-p

　米Googleがダークファイバの買い付け交渉をできるエンジニアの募集をしているのが、この話の発端のようです。つまり、光ファイバを持って、自前のバックボーンを構築しようと。

Google wants 'dark fiber'（Googleはダークファイバを狙っている）

"Google is looking for Strategic Negotiator candidates with experience in...(i)dentification, selection, and negotiation of dark fiber contracts both in metropolitan areas and over long distances as part of development of a global backbone network," the posting reads, in part.
（Googleは都市部と長距離のダークファイバの契約を仕事とする、この道のエキスパートを募集している（要約）。

　ここで「ダークファイバ」とは、既に敷設済みではあるが、利用されていない光ファイバの事をさします。「ダーク」なのは、光が通ってないから、といわれています。数年前のテレコミュニケーションバブルの際に、通信事業者が過剰投資/設備として敷設した光ファイバがあまっており、また、一本の光ファイバーを効率良く使う技術や製品が手ごろになってきているという点も拍車をかけて、以前よりも光ファイバを手に入れるのが簡単になってきていました。

　で、その気になる求人案内はこれかな？

　どうも国際のバックボーンも持とう、なんてにおいもしますね。でも、現状よりもずっとコストがかかると思うんですけど。それとも、それだけコストを掛けてでもサービス品質を上げようということ？

　うーん。どうもGFSに代表されるGoogleのテクノロジーの背景からは考えられない。確かコスト構造が極端に安く、そこが強みだ・・・。と記憶しているんですが。。
